Small Caps Heading Formatter
Typographers set small caps with real capitals kept at full size: Cʀᴇᴀᴛɪᴠᴇ Dɪʀᴇᴄᴛᴏʀ, ʙᴀꜱᴇᴅ ɪɴ NYC. This formatter does that line by line, can capitalise every word instead, keeps acronyms such as NYC as capitals, and adds a divider between lines for a stacked bio.
What Are Small Caps?
Small caps are capital shapes shrunk to the height of small letters. Each one is a separate Unicode character. Click a tile to see which character replaces each letter.
Where Small Caps Come From
Unicode small capitals were made for linguists, not designers. They come from the IPA and Phonetic Extensions blocks, which is why one letter is missing.
Which Letters Have Small Caps?
25 of 26 letters exist; x has no small capital, so it stays a regular x, which looks almost the same. The tool writes q as ǫ, a look-alike more fonts support.
Small Caps Uses

Small Caps vs. All Caps
All capitals shout; small caps speak clearly. Swap all caps for small caps whenever you want emphasis without volume.
Small Caps FAQs
Are small caps the same as small text?
No, small caps keep letters on the baseline and change their shape, while small text raises or lowers letters. See the [small text generator](/small-text/) for tiny letters.
Why is the x not in small caps?
Unicode has no small-capital x, so the tool uses the regular x, which looks almost the same.
How do I make true typographic small caps?
Keep real capitals at full size and set every other letter in small caps. The heading formatter above does this automatically.
Do small caps work on Instagram?
Yes, small caps work in Instagram names, bios and captions, and they are easier to read than most fancy fonts.
Can I use small caps in Word or Google Docs?
Yes, but both apps also have a built-in small caps setting. Use the built-in setting for documents and Unicode small caps for places without formatting.
Why does my q look like ǫ?
The tool uses ǫ because the true small-capital Q (ꞯ) is new and missing from many fonts. ǫ looks close and shows everywhere.
